Incense Burners

An incense burner creates a safer, controlled space for working with heat. Its shape and material should suit the method: some vessels are designed for sticks or cones, while others hold charcoal, prepared ash, and aromatic wood warmed indirectly. In kōdō practice, a small kikigōro bowl supports a stable arrangement of charcoal and a mica plate without exposing the wood to an open flame. Before use, confirm that the vessel is heat-resistant, rests on a level nonflammable surface, and has clear space around it. The outer wall can become hot even when the charcoal is hidden beneath ash. Do not move the burner during a session or touch it with bare hands, and allow its contents to cool completely before cleaning.
