Kodo / Monko

Kōdō is the Japanese way of incense, while monkō literally directs attention toward “listening to incense”. Instead of judging a smell quickly, the practice invites observation of how a tiny fragment of aromatic wood changes under delicate indirect heat. The material is not ignited. It rests on a mica ginyō plate above charcoal that has been covered and regulated within a bed of prepared ash. A basic setup includes a kikigōro burner, charcoal, ash, a ginyō plate, and tools for shaping the surface and moving hot components safely. For a beginner, steady gentle heat, a small piece of wood, and calm attention matter more than elaborate ceremonial rules. Use every component on a nonflammable surface and leave it undisturbed until completely cool.
