Monkō—literally “listening to incense”—is a contemplative way of appreciating aromatic wood through indirect heat. Rather than setting the wood alight, a small piece is warmed above charcoal buried beneath incense ash. The ginyō plate is the delicate surface that makes this controlled method possible.

Made from a thin sheet of natural mica, ginyō is heat-resistant and acts as a barrier between the aromatic wood and the heat source. It rests horizontally above the heat channel formed in the ash cone, supporting the wood while preventing direct contact with the charcoal or an open flame. The rising warmth releases the wood’s aromatic compounds gradually, helping its quieter and more nuanced qualities emerge without burning the material.

To use the plate, prepare the charcoal beneath a carefully shaped layer of clean incense ash and make a narrow vertical heat channel through the centre of the mound. Handle the ginyō with fine tweezers, position it level over the channel, then place a small piece of aromatic wood on top. Heat can be moderated by adjusting the thickness of the ash above the charcoal and the size of the channel before the plate is set in place.

Natural mica is thin and fragile. Lift the plate gently by its edge with ginyō-basami or another suitable fine tweezer, avoid bending or pressing it, and do not touch it while hot. Allow the plate to cool completely before moving or storing it. Replace it if it becomes cracked, warped or otherwise damaged.

One ginyō plate is included. This is a specialised component rather than a complete monkō kit: a heat-resistant incense burner, clean incense ash, incense charcoal, suitable tools and aromatic wood are required separately. Always work on a stable heatproof surface with adequate ventilation. Never leave hot charcoal unattended, and keep the burner away from children, pets and flammable materials.
