Monkō—literally “listening to incense”—is an attentive way of appreciating aromatic wood through indirect heat. Charcoal is buried beneath a carefully shaped layer of incense ash, and a small piece of aromatic wood is warmed on a thin mica plate above it rather than set alight. This four-piece set brings together the tools and ginyō plate needed for the central stages of preparing a listening-incense burner.

Hibashi — fire chopsticks. Hibashi are used to loosen and aerate clean incense ash, place heated charcoal in the centre of the burner and draw ash over it. Their narrow tips also help form a vertical heat channel through the ash mound. This channel directs warmth upward while the charcoal remains concealed beneath the surface.

Haiosae — ash press. The ash press shapes and lightly compacts the mound around the buried charcoal. Its flat working edge helps create an even, composed surface and a stable place for the ginyō plate. The ash should be pressed delicately rather than packed tightly, allowing air to continue circulating around the charcoal.

Ginyō-basami — mica plate tweezers. These fine tweezers allow the fragile plate to be lifted by its edge without touching it with the fingers. They are used to place the ginyō horizontally over the heat channel and to make small adjustments before the aromatic wood is added.

Ginyō — natural mica plate. The thin, heat-resistant mica plate supports the aromatic wood and separates it from direct contact with the charcoal or an open flame. Heat rising through the channel warms the wood gradually, releasing its aromatic compounds without burning the material. This controlled transfer of heat helps reveal quieter and more nuanced aspects of the fragrance.

Begin by preparing and shaping the ash with the hibashi and haiosae. Once the heat channel is complete, use the ginyō-basami to position the plate level over its centre, then place a small piece of aromatic wood on top. The intensity can be moderated before placing the plate by adjusting the depth of the charcoal, the thickness of the ash layer and the width of the channel.

The three metal tools are stored in a folding tatōgami paper wrap measuring approximately 18 × 6.5 cm. The wrap keeps them organised and protected between sessions. The natural mica plate is thin and fragile: do not bend or press it, avoid touching it while hot, and allow it to cool completely before moving or storing it. Replace the plate if it becomes cracked, warped or otherwise damaged.

The set contains hibashi, haiosae, ginyō-basami and one ginyō plate. A heat-resistant incense burner, clean incense ash, incense charcoal and aromatic wood are required separately. Always work on a stable heatproof surface with adequate ventilation. Never leave hot charcoal unattended, and keep the burner away from children, pets and flammable materials.
