Monkō—literally “listening to incense”—is the attentive appreciation of aromatic wood. Instead of being set alight, a small piece of wood is warmed indirectly: charcoal is buried beneath a carefully shaped layer of ash, and the fragrance rises gently from a mica plate placed above it. This three-piece set contains the essential hand tools used to prepare the ash, control the heat path and position the plate with precision.
Hibashi — fire chopsticks. Hibashi are used to loosen and aerate the incense ash, place heated charcoal in the centre of the burner and draw ash over it. Their narrow tips help form the initial mound and make a vertical heat channel through the ash, allowing warmth to reach the plate without exposing the aromatic wood to an open flame.
Ginyō-basami — plate tweezers. These fine tweezers are designed for handling the thin ginyō plate without touching it with the fingers. They make it easier to place the plate horizontally over the heat channel and adjust its position. The plate supports the aromatic wood and separates it from direct contact with the charcoal.
Haiosae — ash press. The ash press is used to shape and lightly compact the ash into a neat cone around the buried charcoal. An even surface helps keep the burner composed and makes the transfer of heat more predictable. The ash should be pressed delicately rather than packed tightly, so that air can continue to circulate.
The instruments are kept together in a folding tatōgami paper wrap measuring approximately 18 × 6.5 cm. This traditional form of wrapping protects the tools, keeps them organised between sessions and makes the compact set convenient to store or carry.
This is a tool set rather than a complete monkō kit. To use it, you will also need a heat-resistant incense burner, clean incense ash, incense charcoal, a ginyō plate and aromatic wood. Charcoal and the plate can remain extremely hot after a session: always work on a heatproof surface with adequate ventilation, never leave hot charcoal unattended, and keep it away from children, pets and flammable materials.
