Kōdō, the Japanese Way of Incense, approaches fragrance with patience, precision and close attention. In monkō—literally “listening to incense”—a small piece of aromatic wood is warmed indirectly above charcoal concealed beneath incense ash. This extended seven-piece set brings together the specialised tools used to prepare the burner, handle the wood, refine the presentation and control the transfer of heat.

Hibashi — fire chopsticks. Hibashi are used during fire preparation to loosen and aerate clean incense ash, position heated charcoal inside the burner and draw ash over it. Their narrow tips also help make the vertical channel that guides warmth upward through the ash while keeping the charcoal below the surface.

Haiosae — ash press. The ash press shapes and lightly compacts the ash mound around the buried charcoal. Its working edge helps create an even cone and a stable upper surface. The ash should be pressed carefully rather than packed tightly, so air can continue to circulate and the heat remains responsive.

Habōki — feather brush. Once the ash has been shaped, the soft feather brush removes stray particles from the inner wall and rim of the incense burner. This finishing step leaves the vessel clean and composed without disturbing the prepared mound.

Ginyō-basami — mica plate tweezers. These fine tweezers lift the delicate ginyō by its edge, avoiding direct contact with the fingers. They make it possible to place the plate level over the heat channel and adjust its position with control before the aromatic wood is added.

Kyōji — incense chopsticks. Kyōji are intended for picking up small pieces of aromatic wood and placing them accurately. Their slender form offers precise control when transferring a piece from its wrapping or container to the centre of the ginyō plate.

Kōsaji — incense spoon. The small spoon provides an alternative way to scoop, carry and place aromatic wood without handling it directly. It is particularly useful for very small, thin or irregular pieces that are difficult to grip securely with chopsticks.

Ginyō — mica plate. The thin, heat-resistant plate supports the aromatic wood above the heat channel and separates it from direct contact with charcoal or an open flame. Rising warmth releases the wood’s aromatic compounds gradually instead of burning the material, helping subtler layers of the fragrance emerge.

To prepare a listening-incense burner, place the charcoal beneath clean ash, shape the mound with the hibashi and haiosae, and create a narrow vertical heat channel. Clean the inner wall and rim with the habōki. Use the ginyō-basami to position the plate horizontally over the channel, then transfer a small piece of aromatic wood with the kyōji or kōsaji. Heat can be moderated before placing the plate by adjusting the depth of the charcoal, the thickness of the ash and the width of the channel.

All seven pieces are kept together in a soft fabric organiser that rolls into a compact form and closes with a tie. The case makes the set convenient to store and carry while keeping the slender tools orderly between sessions. Roll and secure it gently, ensuring that the fragile ginyō is protected from bending or pressure.

The set contains ginyō-basami, kyōji, hibashi, haiosae, habōki, kōsaji and one ginyō plate. A heat-resistant incense burner, clean incense ash, incense charcoal and aromatic wood are required separately. Let every item cool completely before packing it away. Always work on a stable heatproof surface with adequate ventilation, never leave hot charcoal unattended, and keep the burner away from children, pets and flammable materials.
