A kikigōro is a specialised incense burner used for monkō—literally “listening to incense”—within the Japanese tradition of kōdō. Its role is to hold the ash and charcoal arrangement that warms a small piece of aromatic wood indirectly. The wood is not set alight; instead, carefully moderated heat releases its fragrance gradually and invites close, unhurried attention.

This ceramic kikigōro is finished with a celadon glaze. The glazed surface gives the vessel a quiet, composed presence suited to the deliberate preparation of a listening-incense session.

To prepare the burner, fill it with clean incense ash to a practical working depth. Ignite a small or medium piece of incense charcoal separately, allow it to heat evenly, then place it in the centre of the ash with hibashi. Draw ash over the charcoal and use a haiosae to form a neat mound without packing it too tightly.

Make a narrow vertical channel through the upper ash layer so warmth can travel toward the surface. Use ginyō-basami to position a mica ginyō plate horizontally over the channel, then place a small piece of aromatic wood at its centre with kyōji or kōsaji. The ginyō separates the wood from direct contact with the charcoal, allowing it to warm without burning.

The burner works naturally with the previously introduced kōdō tools: hibashi for charcoal and ash, haiosae for shaping the mound, ginyō-basami for the mica plate, and the extended tools used to handle aromatic wood and finish the presentation. These accessories are not included and are available separately.

After use, leave the charcoal, ash and ceramic vessel undisturbed until they have cooled completely. Avoid sudden temperature changes, impacts and abrasive cleaning, which may damage the ceramic body or glazed surface. Remove loose, fully cold ash gently with a dry soft brush or cloth. Do not immerse a warm burner in water.

The product contains one incense burner only. Clean incense ash, small or medium incense charcoal, a ginyō plate, preparation tools and aromatic wood are required separately. Always use the burner on a stable heatproof surface with adequate ventilation. Never leave hot charcoal unattended, and keep it away from children, pets and flammable materials.
